Gibbard on Quasi-realism and Global Expressivism

چکیده
Abstract In recent work Allan Gibbard claims to be both a local quasi-realist, in Blackburn’s sense, and global expressivist. His quasi-realism rests on an argument that for naturalistic discourse but not ethical discourse, the semantic relation of denotation causal tracking can should identified; denoting simply is tracking, vocabulary. I argue Gibbard’s case this conclusion unconvincing, poorly motivated by his own expressivist standards. also even if it were successful, doubtful whether resulting position would count as expressivism, use term.

It is, as is familiar, difficult to be precise about what is involved in realism. The realist in us wants to hold to a certain sort of very general view about our place in the world, a view that, as I have put it elsewhere, mixes modesty with presumption.' On the one hand, it is supposed, modestly, that how matters stand in the world, what opinions about it are true, is settled independently of...

Arrow and Gibbard-Satterthwaite
This article formalizes two proofs of Arrow’s impossibility theorem due to Geanakoplos and derives the Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem as a corollary. One formalization is based on utility functions, the other one on strict partial orders. For an article about these proofs see http://www.in.tum.de/∼nipkow/pubs/
متن کاملExpressivism and Contrary-forming Negation
A well known challenge faced by any version of metaethical expressivism is to provide an adequate treatment of the so-called Frege-Geach problem. The task is to make sense of logically complex sentences like 'If I insulted the host then I ought to apologize', to do so by making sense of the states of mind such sentences would be used to express, and to preserve the validity of intuitively valid...
متن کاملExpressivism Concerning Epistemic Modals
In this paper, a new argument for an expressivist account of epistemic modals is developed. The argument starts from a puzzle about epistemic modals that Seth Yalcin recently presented. Yalcin’s own solution to the puzzle is rejected and a better explanation is given which is based on expressivism concerning epistemic modals. Furthermore, two alleged problems for expressivism are addressed: fir...
